    I really appreciate this post and I’m assuming ever studio is different. My assumption to what you are saying is that the screen placement bears very little to nothing mutual speaker placement. I currently have 50” tv between my speakers and was contemplating getting something ultra wide but closer. Am I right to assume this should not affect my sound quality?

    You don't need 5 Avaa's to feel a big differnce in the very low end (27 Hz?). I have 2 Avaa's in the front corners with a Trinnov and almost 2 meters of rockwool in the back and the bass seems to be at least manageable in my 6,5 x 4 metres bunker!

    • @marcelschechter
      @marcelschechter День назад

      2 meters of rockwool is the essential part, I guess. ;-)

    for 20K you can almost get a Kii Three BTX system which will also solve your issues but also solve your monitoring wishes in many other ways too. Even just the Kii tops or the Dutch and Dutch cardioid speakers will do more to improve the direct bass ratio and room modes than 5 AVAAs.

    • @Durosai
      @Durosai День назад

      Ehhh kind of but not really. The Kii Three and Dutch Dutch mitigate low frequency radiation behind the speaker and a little bit on the sides of the speaker. But youre still going to have to deal with room modes. Youre still going to get reflection off the rear wall, so the length wise room mode will still be an issue. There is no speaker that is a substitute for trapping.,

    • @Durosai
      @Durosai День назад

      But i agree that the AVAA e traps are insanely expensive

    • @sigurtsigurt549
      @sigurtsigurt549 День назад

      No it will not solve any room mode issue , i would say opposite as they are going down to 20hz , using dd8c with 2 avaas in studio..

    • @davidallanmusic
      @davidallanmusic День назад

      Additionally to what others have said, the cardioid effect doesn't go down into the sub frequency range. For that reason I decided to spend more on bass traps and save by not purchasing the Kii's.

      Ive used the Bag End E trap in a few rooms Ive designed. The main thing i like about it over the AVAA is that you can tune it to specific frequencies and set the Q value, whereas the AVAA just acts as a broadband absorber. But unfortunately, Bag End doesnt make the E traps anymore seems like

    Interesting hearing our host talk about taste for choice on the part of engineers. It seems a bit at odds with the notion that you have to record all this stuff to play as intended on all potential systems. Seems to me that you want to choose something that's broadly representative of your target audience's playback, that is non-fatiguing. I like the stretching band idea later. I think importantly what we hear between different gear (or rooms for that matter) is the distribution of the stretched bits across the frequency spectrum, and dynamic spectrum.

    Just a thought about the point that it is impossible to tell if one speaker is better than another.... if you feed signal from an analyser and record a response from the speaker (in an anechoic chamber) identical to the input signal ... then you can say it is accurate surely?? Wonder what Amir from ASR would say.

    The Dutch & Dutch 8C active speakers Darko mentions is one of the best speakers in the world at only $15k. Stereophile lists them as one of the top 15 full range speakers and they’re the only stand mount ones. I’ve enjoyed my D&D’s for two years. Each speaker is Tri- amped/ 2 sub woofers internal DSP/ DAC / Ethernet etc I found them revolutionary and the sound I’ve been looking for all of my life.

      My first studio experience when I was little(was backup singing as a 10 yr old) we were monitoring on Yamaha HS series, and now I currently own some JBL 4333, but my daily listening is one more of an "audiophile" design. I'm intrigued to see where a package designed these days with the same basic philosophy as those Yamahas might go. There's a very different approach to voicing for studio monitors, than there is for PA, than there is for HT; or even for that matter between studio playback and control room monitoring. There's definitely some magic to that latter, as that childhood experience stuck with me. Of course the eye catching white bass unit was a contributing factor!

    Thanks for the detailed video, I have a different question for you. In your video I see that you have exactly the same heater unit as what I have in mine, it is the one with holes in it. Now what happens is that it carries sound to neighbours. Sometimes I can also hear neighbours from in there if they are loud. A while ago my neighbour told me that he could hear me taking calls if I am loud (when I was actually very near that unit (similar to your setup). Now I want to do some audio production at home and also record some songs with me singing but I am just too afraid that it will disturb others. So my question is what do you do to not let sound escape through it ? In summer I basically just cover the whole thing with some covers. I was also thinking to buy the sound proof curtains and wrap it up for summer, but this is not a proper solution.

    If someone is telling you the type of wood, and even the glue makes a difference to the sound of the speaker, you should laugh and walk away, because they are a fucking moron.. Cabinet materials and construction should add nothing to the sound, no resonance or distortion of any kind, the end goal should be that these elements are invisible. Plywood does NOT sound better than MDF, and neither does any other type of wood, the goal is lack of resonance and maximum rigidity. But it's well known that audiophiles are the thickest people on earth per capita so 'fill yer boots', as some bloke once said...

    I see; speaker calibration as not only eq’ing the speakers according to room modes but a whole definition of positioning. And I find it is just as important as acoustic treatment because before the calibration you can find the sweetest spot both for yourself and speakers where to put and how to position them while measuring with a mic. Not by ear only. Doing nothing with eq but only positioning them with the help of the software (or system) and a mic is the main point of starting a calibration. Because the so called “the rules” of %38 or 1/3 or 1/5 didn’t help me at all. And (not for professionals but) I also think there are certain things that people can apply by themselves with DIY methods with nice decoration ways in their living rooms which won’t start a family argument. But the acoustic properties should be known of certain elements like glass wool, acousta-stuff or different kind of materials to be used in that living room. (And many of audiophiles need help/advice on that department.) I’m trying to find some solutions because for audiophiles, not all of them can afford these acoustic treatments by professionals or apply them for a rental house… and that spending %50 for the acoustic treatment is not something you can sell as 2nd hand or use the whole thing later if you move to another house but their system is. So the priority is important here…

    The answer is already in the interview, the ATC active speakers don’t use DSP there all analog in so if you put for instance a Rockna dac in front of them instead off a ifi dac the speakers will respond differently innately so it’s the most fair deal, there is also the acoustics and there is where John is completely right is almost 70% off resoled still only 10% off the audiophiles address the room

    Hi Jesco! Thanks for the video, I find your channel very useful for people like me, who are getting started with room acoustics. I ask you two questions, maybe they can give you an idea for future videos: do you think that tilting monitors upwards can help acoustics by changing the angle of the reflections? In case the computer screen is between monitors is it playing a role in the reflections pattern?

    i really like this channel and have gotten useful information, but in this case you are mistaken. The reason to get your speakers off the top/shelf of a desk is to get them at the proper height and spacing AND for possible desk reflections. Decoupling/speaker vibration is not a real thing. There is no science behind any of that affecting the actual audio that reaches your ears at the mix position. If I'm mistaken I would love to read-up on real-world experiments that prove me wrong.

    Drivers located more than 100cm from the floor are twitters but the frequency range of twitters is way higher than 130kHz. Reflection of sound not only creates cancellation of frequency but also interferes direct sound from the drivers. Those interference creates distortion. Louder the sound, higher the distortion. If carpet doesn’t help, acoustic panel is useless too because they also only absorb high frequencies. However, I see you have few of them installed.

    I think those measurements although very transparent are putting us in wrong track . Computer/program is aming to give observer exact frequencies of detected standing waves so it is presented in form of separate lines which has nothing to do with nature and looks harming to sound . . If we could see the real situation each resonance has it's so called goodeness or selectivity and in acoustics they are quite soft. say 30 Hz resonance means that 28Hz to 32 Hz is way above level. Next resonance may cover pervious not leaving "empty space " between If it would be anyway so presented on screen then no any clear conclusions would emerge. All standing waves are accompanied with multi neighbouring lifted harmonics - only in shape of stiff ball it could be almost sharp We have real rooms with minuimum three dimensiions each is diferent, square in shape , with furniture affecting such results , windows with different ability to reflect and not in line with surface of wall , couratins, so we have whole spectrum of standing waves which I would consider for listener marvealus gain which helps to make big bass with not much speaker size and power. When we beat it then we need to replace it with power of generated bass. In case of room treatment we create another problem that mid/high range cannot be reflected and is heard only direct which is very desired by purists. But resonanat low range which cannot be beaten by used room treatment is amplified by room and is not matching midrange. sopranos providing that our music may be overlayed with bass . Traps may be not enough to balance it back . .

    What room size do you mean by saying that a room would be too small for a 2.5 way speaker?

    You cut my life short with this long and convoluted explanation. Only quantum entanglement miss from your formula. Still ... good job.

    “Wind yer neck in and concentrate on you” Love it. I can’t afford anything new, let alone hi end. But 20 odd years ago people could, so I buy stuff off them. So I now have 2, 4.1 systems...The TV, Living room set up is A Pioneer PD-S703 cd player, Humax box, and Roku TV box, and Sony BDP-S6700 4K upscaling Bluray player, going into a Marantz NR1504, feeding 2 x Tannoy 611 Mk2’s and 2 Gale 30 Series 3060b 100w Bi Polar Surround Sound Speakers above the TV., I also got a Kenwood Series 21 centre as I had a space restriction. This sits on a shelf in a bay window with the 611’s. Compared to anything else I have heard so far, it sounds amazing. Upstairs I have a Pioneer PD-S904, a Panasonic Blueray player DMP BD30. A PC HDMI linked to a Panasonic TV, with a 3.5mm cable switching system for my Sennheiser HDR 180 RF headset and Yamaha Powered Centre (YSP-500) and an Avantree Oasis C bluetooth receiver, with the PC having an Avantree DG45 bluetooth dongle, which send great quality aptX sound to my Srhythm NC25 wireless headpones. The speakers are 4 x SB-PF6 from an old Panasonic Surround system. I know it’s not the best, but it’s the best I can afford, it’s quality sound for next to nothing, and the total was around £1000. I loved the PD-S904 so much I found a new one, (god knows where it’s been for 20 odd yrs) for a spare. I love both systems, they were built for different purposes, and do the job I gave them more than well enough. I’m super happy with them both, and I don’t lose any sleep thinking I’m missing out on something. :)

    In the last week or so I've finally dived down the acoustic rabbit hole. ! bought the behringer mic, downloaded REW and I have watched hours of Jesco's great videos as I came to realise everything about my music room was wrong I'm not sure of this take though. I can understand why he can't recommend a particular product, because he doesn't feel he has the data to vouch for it, or doesn't want to talk about something 99% of views can't get. But I don't understand the blanket advice not to use them. If I can access it and afford it, and there is data to back it up, I'd rather use something other than rock wool or fibreglass. If I'm going to spend hours in a room every day, I don't want a nagging doubt at the back of my mind that I'm breathing in the new asbestos. Which is what we're worried about. After all they were designed to be stuck behind dry wall. I think this is very different to say, refusing a vaccine because of a 'nagging doubt'. The worst thing thing that could happen if you don't take a vaccine is that you die and infect others. In this case, what's the worst thing about using an eco-friendly product that works? It costs more? - I've spent so much money on gear I didn't need, I think I'd like to avoid buying that next guitar and spend it on eco-friendly absorbtion instead Dead rats might be great sound absorbers too, and I'm sure there is very little chance of getting bubonic plague from them, but I wouldn't like to have them all over my wall and ceiling, even if they have a layer of fabric and plastic on them.
